You know the score. All your favourite Nintendo characters jammed in to one game blowing each other to pieces until only one remains etc.. A simple formula, but a very effective and successful formula. The Supersmash Bros. series is famed for its pick-up-and-play nature with easy to figure out controls and a learning curve of about 5 minutes for first time players. Because of this, it fast grew in to one of Nintendo’s most popular titles and one of the best multiplayer games available on Nintendo’s consoles.

This year is no different. The same winning formula is there but with some differences. There are now 35 available characters, 9 more than the last version including some non-Nintendo faces such as Solid Snake and Sonic the Hedgehog. Along with the new characters come new levels, weapons, customizable game options, online multiplayer gaming, a custom level builder, a new story mode for singleplayer fun and some nicely polished graphics.

Super Smash Bros. is bigger and better than its predecessors. Almost every aspect of the game has been improved and the new features round the game off. So much fun can be had with this game i really would advise anyone to buy it. In fact, If you have friends and you own a Wii then it is your duty to get this game.

You know those games that are so bad you wonder how they ever even made it on to the shelves? Environments that are so ugly, game mechanics that are so broken and controls that are so mind numbingly ill-thought-out that you feel like throwing yourself in front of a train? The Incredible Hulk unfortunately falls in to this category of games.

The textures are diabolical, cars and pedestrians randomly appear out of nowhere such is the poor draw-distance.The representation of New York City is so bad that it really could be any other city world wide. Of the distinguishable landmarks there are supposed to be, the Wii version is missing 15 out of the 50 there are in the game on the other platforms.

Obviously graphics aren’t everything. I’d definitely pick a game that is graphically unimpressive but great to play over a game that stuns the eyes but not the brain. However, The Incredible Hulk is awful on the gameplay front too. Camera angles are infuriatingly hard to manipulate which makes combat very frustrating (although the AI isbad enough for this not to be much of a problem) and the controls are pretty much broken. The story mode is fairly lengthy and will take a while to complete - which isn’t necessarily a good thing.

The Incredible Hulk is a very bad game indeed. Do not buy it - it would serve only to encourage the game developers to create more of this kind of garbage.

Lego Indiana Jones is yet another game from the same team that made the Lego Star Wars games that came before it - and as a result it’s very similar in the way it works, looks and feels.

Lego Indiana Jones tasks the player with various puzzles to solve, enemies to destroy, obstacles to get round and bosses to defeat through a series of levels that span the original trilogy if movies. The puzzles range from the stupifyingly easy to some quite tricky challenges -although not quite as hard as has been seen before. The levels have a good amount of detail and there are many comedic touches and movie references here and there that really add to the flavour of the game. However, the game does begin to get a bit repetitive after a few hours. The visuals aren’t brilliant - but since when was a game set in a lego universe going to look absolutely spectacular? The AI is a big letdown and can be incredibly frustrating at times and still doesnt appear to have been improved since the previous games. It is possible to use the motion sensor controls for certain aspects of the game but it often makes tasks harder and more time consuming and so I’d reccommend sticking to the normal controller.

The game is fun, has a few laugh out loud moments and is definitely a step up from Star Wars. However, the Lego novelty wears off quickly and there are still some issues that don’t do it any favours. Good, clean, family fun for fans of the Lego series and fans of the films - exactly as we expected. There just isn’t enough to it.

The Nintendo Wii revolutionised gaming by introducing bodily movement in to the gaming experience. Not only did this bring about a more immersive and enjoyable gaming experience it also meant exercise and so it was obvious from the beginning that it wouldnt be long before games would be designed purely to get gamers off their sofas and start burning some calories. Wii Fit is one of these games.

The main component of Wii Fit is the ‘balancing board’ that gamers can stand upon whilst performing various activities such as boxing, yoga and jogging. The board is able to measure all sorts of things such as your BMI, weight and ‘Wii Fit Age” and tracks your progress as you improve your scores in the activities. The board itself is an impressive feat of engineering and is very responsive indeed. The idea behind Wii Fit is good, but unfortunately it fails to deliver much in practise. The game is seriously flawed in certain areas - For instance, it can’t measure the muscle mass of an individual leading to some dodgy classifications. Multiplayer options are severely limited too and there really isn’t any area of the game that will get you ‘addicted’. The biggest flaw of all is one of the most fundamental parts of the game too - the amount of actual effective exercise. Sure, the game does require exercise, but I would definitely advise against purchasing this ‘game’ if you have visions of shedding some serious pounds. To get decent results you are going to have to use this piece of equipment rather a lot.

However, for those of us that just want a bit of fun and enjoy being a little more active ( and I assume most Wii users fall under this category), this game is excellent. So what if there are some innacuracies? So what if you can’t lose massive amounts of weight with it? Wii fit is easy to use, enjoyable to play with and a stunning example of the advances of technology in the gaming industry.

Wii Fit is the best workout/exercise game on the market - but that is nothing to shout out from the rooftops. With its feeble impact on the body, Wii Fit comes up a little short. However, the game is innovative, easier than heading down to the gym (and a lot more enjoyable) and has bridged the gap between video entertainment and exercise. Excellent for the casual user, but maybe slightly disappointing for the fitness freaks out there. A good sign of things to come…

The Mario Kart franchise has been one of the great successes of the gaming industry and has been for 15 or so years. Be it on the SNES, DS, GCN or N64, the series has always had a strong following. So, with the release of the Wii in 2006 and no new Mario Kart since the critically acclaimed edition for the DS in 2005, fans all over the world were getting excited (and nervous) about the new version’s imminent release - will it take things to the next level? Exactly how different will it be? Will the wireless technology hinder the gameplay?

I can tell you that the answers to these questions are : Sort of-ish, Not particularly and no.Mario Kart Wii offers all the usual ingredients that we have come to know and love - large numbers of weird and whacky tracks (not to mention a lot of the old classics), frantic kart battles and multiplayer mayhem - plus some new added features/improvements : Mid-air stunts (performed by flicking the wii-mote), dynamic course changes, a steering wheel, motorbikes, new battle modes, improved online facilities and some (minor) graphical enhancements. It sounds like it should be the best Mario Kart yet…

But it just isn’t. Well, not quite anyway.

The nostalgic feel of playing the old courses is great. But it wears off quickly and leaves you with a set of tracks that just aren’t as fun as the new ones.

Now I’m sure this has happened to all of us. Frequently. Too frequently - you’ve been in first for quite some time. It’s the last lap. Just coming up to the last corner. Heart pumping. Sweat dripping from forehead. Using every bit of willpower to avoid scratching the itch on your nose as you know it will all be over soon. Victory is guaranteed, surely? But, no. The computer/friend/bastard fires a blue shell at you. 5 karts whizz past. Controllers are smashed, discs are snapped and friendships are broken. Most people will have been hoping that this edition might somehow stop this happening so much or give the player some method of dodging these heartbreaking weapons. I regret to inform you that there is nothing you can do. Infact, things have got worse. There are new, more powerful weapons which appear so regularly its painful. Too many times the result is merely a lottery.

Mario Kart Wii looks okay. It’s not brilliant, but not dismal either. The difference can clearly be seen when comparing with previous games, but not enough to warrant any kind of special mention.

However, this is where the criticism ends. These minor blemishes shouldn’t put anyone off purchasing this game. It plays fantastically, its brilliant offline, online and with friends and grabs a hold of the Mario Kart torch with a firm grip. It might not be the defining game of the series but you’ll play it for hours and you’ll enjoy it. Essential for your Wii collection.
